These iconic birds of prey seem to float across the air. Although majestic, Bald Eagles are basically scavengers and readily eat road kill and other dead animals. Sorry to burst your bubble. Their striking white heads and lean yellow eyes seem to never miss a twitch of a chicken leg or carcass. Juvenile Bald Eagles have a mottled color and don’t show their classic bald head untill their 3rd year.
Capturing the beauty and power of these magnificent creatures on camera is a challenge for nature photographers and wild life photographers. They seem to come out of no-where and vanish before a click is even rendered.
These birds are masters of the sky, soaring high above with effortless grace, but they can also be elusive and unpredictable. To increase our chances of finding Bald Eagles we scour the country side looking for the hulking silhouettes in the bare spring tree branches. With success.
Being patient is part of being a nature photographer and waiting and being patient when eagles are involved is a must have. Don’t worry though. Once you’ve scoped them out and decided to take some photos you will draw a crowd and it can become a party. Or in our case, a traffic stopping accident waiting to happen.
